The Importance of Reference Tracks With Mark Abrams
In Season 1 of Paradox Jukebox, I had the privilege of interviewing engineer/producer extraordinaire, Mark Abrams. Mark has worked under countless industry professionals who are leading the field in recording and producing, as well as spearheaded the education department of PureMix.com.
During the interview, I asked Mark what he thought was one of the most important things to know when going into the studio for the first time, and he immediately replied with “reference tracks.” Reference tracks are song examples that you need to have ready for your producer, so that they understand what kind of sonic masterpiece you are trying to paint.
For example, if you’re trying to go for a sound that is similar to Brandi Carilie, mixed with some Kaleo rock vibes, it might be a great idea to choose a few songs from each artist that you think will help paint that picture a little clearer. Maybe you like the guitar sound from Kaleo, but want the type of vocal blend that Brandi and the Twins get on their harmonies? There are so many combinations of sounds out there, and the sonic world is your little oyster. So, take a deep dive and find the sounds that move you!
Listen to the entire episode with Mark where he discusses this concept at length. Then, listen to a track featuring artist Buggie, who was on a later episode in the season.
