What NOT To Do Before a Gig

We’ve been talking about good habits for a while now so why not talk about breaking the bad ones that you didn’t even know you had? Here are three things you definitely should not do before a gig!

1.Drink Carbonated ANYTHING.

When you sing, you “breathe in to your belly” right? Read: you expand your lungs and your diaphragm pushes all of your internal organs down creating the illusion that you are expanding your belly with air. With that, your stomach and all of its contents are getting pushed around more so than normal. When you drink something that’s carbonated, you’re adding GAS to the situation. So, you burp more. Just stick with our good ole friend, flat water.

2. Eat/Drink Dairy

Don’t get me wrong. We are CHEESE STANS here at Music on The Move Studios. Ice Cream? Absolutely. Fettuccini Alfredo? YES PLEASE. However, not before a gig. Why? Dairy’s texture, specifically milk, ice cream, and creamy pasta sauces coat your throat leaving it feeling thick, and making it difficult to sing. Try to avoid these things a few hours before a gig. After? TREAT YO SELF!

3. Not Warm Up

Come on. This one seems obvious but it you aren’t warming up for a gig, you could cause more harm than good. Your voice is a muscle and needs to be treated as such. Much like athletes warm up before a game, your voice needs time to get ready to do the vocal gymnastics you’re about to perform! Do you think Simone Biles would defy gravity and the laws of physics the way she does without warming up her muscles first? Absolutely not! Give yourself 5-10 minutes at least to do some simple warm ups and you’ll be good to go!
