New Music Friday: Mary Jennings & EvyIvy

Friday is here and we’re ringing in the weekend with two fantastic new tracks by a couple of wonderful Music on the Move showcase alumni - Mary Jennings & EvyIvy!

Premiering earlier this week, Mary Jennings released her single ‘Sad’ along with a poignant music video that reflects the overarching theme of the song, and how it can feel living day to day with depression.

On her Instagram, Mary states: “When I wrote ‘Sad’ I was in a very heavy place. As I started to work on the production, I knew I wanted the song to help pull me out of the sadness instead of keeping me in it.”

‘Sad’ has an addictive quality that reels you in. Its earnest and candid lyrics take the listener through the drudging push and pull and looming heaviness that is depression, and the added guilt of wanting yet being unable to do anything to “get better”. The song’s “pseudo nouveau 80s vibe” helps balance the gravity of its lyrics and feels alive and light; almost inducing a sense of hope that we can befriend our own sadness, sit with it, and allow it to feel lighter with time. The vision for the song’s sound was adapted with the help of Coley O’Toole, according to Jennings, and helped achieve Mary’s goal of letting ‘Sad’ pull her out of her own wave of sadness.

The video takes this single to a whole new level! A delicate balance of Mary’s somber demeanor juxtaposed with her cheerful surroundings, and a splash of “80’s creep factor” personified by Aubryn make the video the perfect accompaniment to this single!

Cozy up with your brightest pj’s and fuzzy slippers, get a pint of ice cream, and dance around in your living room with this video on repeat!

Our other hot hit this week is EvyIvy’s single, ‘Chisel’, which also premiered on all platforms earlier this week!

If I could describe ‘Chisel’ as briefly as possible: “Picture yourself entranced in a dimly lit room, filled with plushy red cushions, a haze of smoke, and an intense ache of longing in the air.” However, since you came here for the long version…

Reminiscent of smooth 90’s R&B mixed with elements of synth pop, this sultry tune will make you want to turn down the lights, light some candles, and turn up the heat!

EvyIvy’s rich and velvety vocals build steadily with this tune’s accompanying rhythmic beat, climaxing with a resounding high note, gradually descending and then gently, the song evens into an echoing sigh of relief.

(Now, go get yourself a cold glass of ice water, add ‘Chisel’ to all of your playlists, and keep reading!)

In a sweet note, EvyIvy added: “This song was brought to life, and finally saw the light of day, because of playing Music on the Move showcases and the encouragement from founders Erin and Caitie, and The Hellcats.”

If that doesn’t warm your heart and make you want to attend our upcoming showcase to support all the wonderful artists we feature, I don’t know what will! Get tickets to the showcase by clicking the link below!
