New Music Friday: Erin O’Dowd & Jordyn Delzer

It’s New Music Friday, y’all!

Titanic was re-released in theaters today, and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Love is saturating the air like a grandmother’s perfume in a cramped elevator, and nothing pairs better with all this romance than cliché f-boys and the women who immortalize their dubious behavior through song.

If you caught yesterday’s showcase feature on Erin O’Dowd, then you already have an idea of this multi-faceted artist’s style.

Erin leads us into this week’s playlist picks with her single, ‘Trick Pony’. Influenced by empowered, musical greats like Loretta Lynn, Erin wrote this song as a way to reclaim power over the narrative of her experience, while also making light of it.

Inspired by a relationship going nowhere, and an unexpected conversation with an older gentleman in a dingy dive bar, ‘Trick Pony’ playfully calls out a slick cowboy who has gotten too big for his britches.

“For the stories you tell and the lies you believe/Oldest trick in the book/You’re just a broke back sleaze”, Erin’s lyrics pull no punches. Set to a rhythmic back beat, much like a locomotive chugging its way through the old west; ‘Trick Pony’s elements of bluegrass and classic country marry the music with its lyrics.

A perfect blend of soft, smooth, and gritty; Erin’s rich vocals and ‘Trick Pony’s infectious tune are bound to get you bopping along and kicking the dust off your boots!

Speaking of sleazy guys and dive bars, our other featured song this week is ‘Real Man Now’ by Jordyn Delzer.

‘Real Man Now’ is one of the singles from Delzer’s debut EP, ‘Turquoise & Feathers’, released just last month. With storytelling reminiscent of early Taylor Swift, this song regales the listener with the tale of an unwitting young woman who’s picked up at a bar by a smooth-talking dirt bag.

Instrumentally, ‘Real Man Now’ is a lovely call back to the breakout stylings of The Band Perry and is dripping with the sounds of 00’s country nostalgia. A wistful mix of naivete, regret, and a tender, scorned heart; this song speaks to the hopeless romantics who’ve looked for the best in love but have been hurt by the worst.

If you’re looking for tunes to add to your Galentine’s Day playlist, ‘Trick Pony’ and ‘Real Man’ now should be at the top of your list. In the meantime, check them out over on our New Music Friday playlist on Spotify!
