New Music Friday Playlist: Songs in Color

What do you feel when you hear Halsey’s ‘Blue”, Taylor Swift’s ‘Lavender Haze’, Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, or ACDC’s ‘Back in Black’?

Some of the most emotive songs have been written within the concept of a color and the sensations it can invoke within us. Color has the power to encapsulate the energy we are seeking to feel. This week’s featured artists have taken the concept of color into their hands, and created an immersive experience in their songs, painting music in color!

Black. In Western cultures, the color black often symbolizes mourning, sadness, and passing. In ancient Egypt, it signified life and rebirth, and in China it symbolizes stability and power. Leni Black’s ‘Black Sweatshirt’ manages to encapsulate all these variations of the meaning behind the color black. Telling the story of seeing herself in the mirror while wearing her ex’s hoodie, “the melody popped into my head…and took two years to complete”, Leni states. This song takes you through all the emotions of recovering from a relationship’s end. From finding comfort in the familiarity in what was and clinging to the closeness, to outgrowing the need to live in those feelings and memories, eventually finding steadiness and security in your new present — all wrapped up in the coziness of an ordinary black sweatshirt.

Amethyst. Coming in varying shades of pale, soft lavender to deep, rich violet; often associated with representing spiritual awareness, transformation, balance, and creativity, amethyst can invoke feelings within of tranquility, dreaminess, and sheer serenity. Falling in love can often feel similar. Aeva Alexander’s ‘Amethyst’ capitalizes on the ethereal qualities of this color, mirroring it in a love letter, and reflecting it back in this dream pop bop.

Whether you’re looking to feel reborn and rejuvenated, or engulfed in the warm haze of infatuation, this week’s picks will add a splash of sound and color to your day!
